(BEIJING, April 12 Xinhuanet.com) - the two sides to the Yemen rejected an initiative of the Arab Gulf to a peaceful transition of power. President Ali Abdullah Saleh refuses to go at the beginning, and protesters reject any suspicion of immunity from prosecution.
Monday was another blow to efforts for a peaceful transition of power in the Yemen.
President Ali Abdullah Saleh rejected a proposal by the Arab nations of the Gulf that he resign before the end of his term in 2013.
Clashes between demonstrators and security forces were sometimes fatal for two months of daily protests. More than 120 people were killed.
Sunday, the Gulf Cooperation Council six nations called Saleh to resign under an agreement with the protest movement.
Last week, Saleh rejected an offer of mediation by the CCG, who had invited Saleh groups and the opposition to Saudi Arabia for talks.
In its offer of Sunday the GCC does not specify a timetable for a transfer of power to the Assistant to Saleh. But it included protections for the President and his family from prosecution for crimes under his direction - another condition rejected by the opposition. The protesters demands include the see trial Saleh and members of his family.
Carefully drafted statement of rejection of Saleh commended the CCG offers, but he insisted on his remaining in service until the 2013 elections.
But his supporters and pro-government groups went further, calling the offer of the CCG "flagrant interference in the internal matters of the Yemen."
Tens of thousands of demonstrators kept the pressure. In Sanaa, the demonstrators have included a considerable number of women. There are also steps in Aden, Taiz and other major cities.
