Human Rights Watch: UN should probe deadly suppression of Syria (PA) - Ha'aretz

The New York - based Human Rights Watch urged the United Nations Sunday to implement a survey on the repression of protestors against Syrian security forces that left at least 120 people dead in the past two days.

The international rights group also called the U.S. and the EU to impose sanctions against the Syrian officials who are responsible for the use of force.

More than 300 people were killed, including more than 120 on Friday and Saturday, since the uprising against the regime of President Bashar Assad began five weeks according to rights groups.

Sunday, 10 also said Syrian authorities detained activist Daniel Saud human rights groups, who heads the committees for the defence of democracy, freedoms and human rights. Saud lives in the coastal town of Banias.

Activists in Syria, said at least 14 people were killed Saturday when security officials used live bullets to disperse thousands of people, who were attending the funeral of previous victims. Saturday, two legislators Syrian announced their resignation from Parliament in protest against the killing of demonstrators.

The recent violence against demonstrators took place despite Assad approved a decree which ended five decades of the State of emergency, which had curbed the right of the Assembly in Syria and given the Government sweeping powers to crack down on dissidents.
